Technology!

Technology

Online learning is very different than in person learning because you are pretty much on your own. Taking an online class seems to make you less responsible in completing the assignments then actual class courses that are due in class. Although there was always an assignment due every week I can become a habit to the assignment hours before it is due. As well as you can get ahead in turning in assignments. A benefit in an online class is that you have more than the usual time to complete the assignment. A challenge is that sometimes things are not understood or clearly explained and cannot rely in asking the instructor to show me or explain in person. Even though we can email the instructor via email it still takes time to wait for a response and it is not the same then having it explain face to face. The technologies that we used in this semester were ok I really do not fell any technology was beneficial in this course. The blogger was not really a benefit because I felt it can be used for other students to peek around others work an get information from them instead of actually putting effort into the assignment. Tends to be a way for people to really on others work in case they were not able to read the novels or documents we had to read for certain assignments. The only technology that help me a lot in this course was being able to download most of the text through kindle fire for free. It really helps that in this course we had links that would take us directly to the kindle fire version meaning it was free and had to avoid paying over ten dollars in order to complete an assignment. This is something that I will be using more in other classes. Every time I have a certain piece of a document or a book to analysis I would make sure that instead of going out and buying the certain document that is required to look it up and see if it is offer for free. Overall taking an only class requires a lot of knowledge for it eventually you will find it’s tricks to it.

Revising

When it comes to writing I feel that either I need to know what I am writing or I don’t. The times that I know what I am writing about I tend to do good because I have so much to talk about that I add all the details that are part of my writing. When I do not know what am writing about I know that my paper will make no sense and will be confuse have way and start repeating my words. I usually like to summarize and do a cluster to make sure what the points I want to talk about are. Revising is not really my friend. I know that it is the best thing to do to be successful in writing I try my best to take my paper to get revised but someone else and not myself because if I revise it will be perfect for me. When other people read my writing they are able to comment and tell me my mistakes. For Essay number 3, I did not get the chance to take it to the writing center and get it revised but I got my boyfriend to read it and point out the mistakes or the parts where my essay did not make sense. Revising is always the best route to go when it comes to writing essay that are longer than 3 pages because there is so much to be put on longer papers and sometimes you feel you going the right way when in reality you’re not.

Fear of Death

If we only knew what happens after death. But why worry about death now when you should be focusing about present time and enjoy life. In the book White Noise by Don DeLillo, the fear of death plays throughout the entire book. Jack and his wife Bebette are always wondering who would be the first one to die. As the story goes on, Jack and Babette both find out that they can possibly die sooner than the other. As much as each of them tends to be strong and not make it seem that they fear death in reality they are both scared to be the first one to die. “Babette and I have turned our lives for each other’s thoughtful regard, turned them in the moon light in our pale hands, spoken deep into the night about fathers and mothers, childhood, friendships, awakening, old loves, old fears, (except fear of death).” (Page 30). Both Jack and Babette fear death fear the unknown.  Part of the human condition is to want to know and understand what is going on around us why things happen and death plays part of the questions that go through people’s head.  Everyone would like to know what happens after death and whether a person goes to heaven or hell. American’s risk of fear due to their emotions and always wonder their beliefs of death.

The (Super) Marketplace of Images: Television As Unmediated Meditation In Delillo's White Noise

This article was writting by John N. Duvall a English professor at Purdue University. This article is based in how the fear of death that Jack and Baba have through out White Noise. The article is showing how the German fascism and contemporary America culture has a big role through out the book. " This failure underscores the key differences between Hitler's fascism and American proto-fascim: ideology ceases to be a conscious choice, as it was for the National Socialists, and instead becomes in contemporary America more like the Althusserian notion of ideology as unconscious system of representation." (page 433) Another thing that this article talks about is how the postmodern media is seen in many moments in the book. Watching television was important to Babette since she demanded family gather to watch television on fridays. Her demand of watching television is seen as another reason why she fears death since "Every day on the newa there's another toxic spill." (Page 439) One of the main focuses seen through out the book is how death is fear. Death and television are compared " The heart of the tv man's anger is for those who experience "real"; that is, as part of our cultural repertoire, people know, like the tv man, that the media is suppose to be interested in marketing disaster."(page 438) Through out the article Duvall brings out points in how the the media and death are used through out the book and are the reasons why the characters fear death.

After reading this Article I was able to see more about the book then what I had an idea of. I would had never put the whole friday night television dates Baba would planned for and how all the things around were the cause to why death was feard through out the book. Also how the credit issue and how Jack would use his credit card to shop around to make him feel better and not like a poor person.
This article would be a good help for essay number 3. Their is so much that is understood of the things and reasons for events happening through out the book.

Spoiler Alert

When I started reading this book I felt confused but little by little I was able to understand it. Even though sometimes I am confused I get back to it. I must admit I am hooked to the book! So I am almost done reading the book but I muist admit I was surprise to find out Baba's secret. Once you get to part III you will find out why Baba has been acting different and the things she is has done to this cause. I was surprise because when I started reading the book I had a feeling Jack would have an affair since he is always very descrifull about all the women around him in how atracting and beautiful they are. Both Denise and Jack had an idea that Baba was hiding something do to the change. You will find out why Baba is always chewing gum. I hope I didn't spoile it too much but I am excited to see whether Jack will get over the situation and if they will end up getting a divorce or stay toether.

Mid-Term Check In

One of the biggest challenges in this class so far has been not having the typical one hour session class with the instructor in front of the class. I have taken other online classes but taking an English class is very different it makes it more different and difficult due to the fact that we do not have in class discussions. I really have succeeded in getting more involved. By getting more involved I mean commenting other people working and seeing what other classmates are doing. As a college student all I focus is on my work and trying to succeeded I have never cared for other peoples work. But when this class started commenting peoples work is fun because there is a meaning to it and that to me is working ad helping together. The readings that we have done in the class have not affected me. I must admit that they are not the easiest but I try my best to understand the readings. Literary Analysis is different from other writing I have done in college. It takes more effort and more time to understand what I am reading. My goal for this next half of the semester is to put more effort in my readings. Also to communicate with the professor for any questions I have for any confusion I have and would like to have a better understanding to succeed in the assignments. My goal is to end this class with a good grade and with strength that will help me succeed throughout college and my career.

Tentative Thesis Paragraph

       A Modest Proposal

Who cares of the health risk of eating babies, our societies potential would be reached. Why not have a juicy baby for dinner. " A child will make two dishes at an entertainment for friends, and when the family dine alone, the tore of hind quarter will make a reasonable dish, and seasoned with little pepper or salt will be very good boiled on the fourth day, especially in the winter"(Page 11). Swift proposal in killing babies that come from poor families would benefit the wealthy people both in having a healthier meal and dealing less with invaluable people around them. Swift proposal would become a disruption to human morals and value. The idea of eating babies might not be the healthiest thing to do but would be his point to population control.

A Modest Proposal

A Modest Proposal
The problem that Swift identifies is the population in his society is causing a lack of resources which included fewer jobs for people, homeless people, and starvation of people. Swift is making fun of how people should start eating babies. The purpose to his idea was based in cutting the population down and having people eating meat and getting protein from the baby's. Swift proposed to star eating baby's including the suggestion in women given birth to more baby's providing more baby's to be killed. The more baby's they were able to kill, the more food they had and the less people they had in their society.
His solution is not logical. It is very dramatic because the audience knows that people are not really going to eat babies but yet the idea is thrown out causing women to faint due to his proposal. Swift created this proposal to get the society attention and to make them realize that something must be done. in order to become a better society. Satire brings attention and is blaming the people for the conditions the people are living with and by Swift proposing this proposal his goal is to correct them. Swift uses irony and exaggeration to explain his message.

Subaru: Cut the Cord Advertisement

This Subaru advertisement is very effective to me. The young child targets the audience her with fear and sweetness makes a lovely character making the car brand Subaru look good. The audience to this advertisement is parents. Especially parents who are raising their young children and scared for them to be on their own. The Subaru car brand in this advertisement shows a dependability does who own a Subaru. In this example the father the child is very protective and by him owing the Subaru, he can always count on his car to help get to where his needed. The purpose of this advertisement is to show parents that a Subaru is the best family car to own.

What my work will be About...

It was really hard to pick one of the quotes I had two in mind but I choosed to write on quote number two " Bartleby's ghostly presences in the story is the result of a breakdown of the narrator's mind. In fact, Bartleby does not exist at all as an actual scrivener, but instead represents a part of the narrator that he wishes to repress in order to become a more effective and industrous worker." I am currently summarizing and looking over a couple of other quotes in the book that I would like to use as part of my paper. Once I pick my top four I will focus how it reflects to the thesis I have chosen.

Bartleby, the Scrivener A Story of Wall-Street

“What was to be done? He would do nothing in the office: why should he stay there? In plain fact, he had now become a millstone to me, not only useless as a necklace but afflictive to bear. Yet I was sorry for him”. (Pg. 42, paragraph 3)
This quote contributes to the memory of the meaning of the story in how
The lawyer in the story was able to realize that he felt sorry for one of his employees. He had hired a simple copier by the name of Bartleby who was given an office to work in. At some point Bartleby decided to stop doing things around the office and his only response to mostly everything was “I would prefer not to”. One day the lawyer found out that Bartley was living in his office. Bartleby had no family, no place to live, and knew no one in town. One day the lawyer told Bartleby should start working once again or start packing his stuff and move along.  Bartley continue his attitude and sure did the lawyer fire him. The lawyer suggested that he should be gone by tomorrow. The lawyer keeps thinking over and over again whether he would find Bartley in the office again or not. Bartley never left the office and would not say any words. Like in the quote, The Lawyer had no idea of what he was going to do with Bartleby how was he going to get rid of him. The lawyer did not wanted to just throw Bartley out in the street he wanted to help him out. This quote is important because it explains how Bartley had become a mean full person to him. The lawyer worried in what Bartley was going to do without his home which was his office. The lawyer knew that he had nothing more to do in the office. Through the book the Lawyer tries his best to get Bartley out not his life and having not to deal with what would happen to him. But at the end of the day Bartley comes again to the Lawyers life. At the end of the story the Lawyer ends up taking care of Bartley as much as he avoided to help him and to not have him around he knew deep inside him that he wanted to help him out. The lawyer was very sympathetic towards Bartleby through the story.

Introductory Video :D

Good Readers and Good Writers

Am I good reader? Why do others read and I don't? What is a good reader? Isn't that the questions we all like to ask. Most of us tend to just read when we have to read but why not read? We all wonder if reading books are just meant for good readers, but what is a good reader? According to Viadimir Nabokov " Good readers, good writers" Nabokov says that a good reader should notice and fun del detail of a certain book, or article. Along with having a good imagination, memory and just understanding what is being read.  I agree with Nabokov because a good reader while always understand word by word of what is being read. If a reader cannot understand then there is no reason to why they can picture in their head of what is being said in the reading.

I consider a good reader to be someone who is motivated to read and not being forced to read. When motivation is involved, more imagination plays in roll. A good reader is a reader who wants more as they read along, tries to guess what is next and is wishing they can play a role in the plot. I consider myself a good reader. The reason is because i just don't read for homework assignments i read for fun. I like reading different kind of books. I always try to guess what is next and try to guess what the next chapter will be about. Sometimes I just want to finish the entire book in seconds even though it never works that way. I know that to others I am not a good reader but I believe I am and that is my motivation to keep reading and become a better reader.
